I am on the last (12th) book, “Magnificent Appearing” after having devoured the Left Late gallop series. I had seen the first movie, “Left Tedious” years before and enjoyed it, although it did leave you hanging. I purchased the books and read them and at the same time purchased the 3 DVD’s. I unprejudiced finished watching all 3 movies. I was disappointed. The script somewhat followed the books, but then by World at War, it went off into its believe world. The characters I grew to savor in the books were almost one-dimensional in the movie. If you perceive the special features you will glimpse interviews with various celebrities about the movie. I wish they had made more of the tale into the movie. Janaya (“Chloe”) mentioned how long everything took, but I was surprised, and had to reverse it to hear it again, to learn that it was only 6 weeks of filming. After seeing the 95 small features I can have it. This had so considerable potential, but dropped the ball. Although I must say, the actors were terrific! Everyone matched the descriptions and personalities in the books. Gordon Currie was astounding as the Antichrist! I caution you to read the books first, then discover the movies. If not, you will not savor the deeper meaning to them. You don’t even need to be religious really, unbiased luxuriate in the mighty insights. Thank you Kirk Cameron for helping to bring the myth to life, except it should have been more alive.

This is a very agreeable collections of all three Left Tedious DVDs and with the special DVD it is worth getting. It is safe to bag not only for the Christians you know but with the plan the DVDs are made they are tall for non-Christians as well. These can be old for evangelism and outreach to your friends. Worth buying and worth the heed.

Its rare when DVD season sets are released cessation together. Usually fans have to wait 10-12 months for a current release, but Paramount Home Entertainment has done apt by the fans with this rapidly release of JAG Season Three on DVD, coming honest four months after Season Two. JAG Season Three was a milestone of sorts as CBS picked up the explain after its short Season Two trial rush for a stout 24-episode Season Three. The extras in the Season Three site will be somewhat cramped due to the like a flash turnaround time between the release of the second and third season. Based on what we saw on the Season Two location, there will be one or two commentaries and probably two short featurettes. This place is in fleshy frame 1.33:1, stereo and surround mixed, and has closed captioning. No widescreen, which is a travel, but not unique for a tv series. Overall though, this was the first corpulent season where JAG began hitting its plug. There were few aged episodes, and a spirited season finale. One to hold up on March 20th. Highly recommended.

I’m delighted they worked so swiftly to secure the 3rd season of JAG out in impartial a few months. I have Seasons 1 and 2 and am enjoying them both thoroughly. JAG was such a sizable TV exhibit and it ended before it’s time, in my view. Now at least we can appreciate them on DVD, if they don’t remove forever to achieve Seasons 4 through 10 out. Wound and Mac had some of the best chemistry on TV, and there was a gargantuan supporting cast with characters that came to feel like family. I looked forward to every unusual episode and was seldom, if ever, disappointed. The writing, the characters, the action, the casting, the integrity of the explain was beyond compare at times and I smooth miss it. At least now the DVDs are coming out in stunning fine time (after waiting 10 years to set Season 1 out) . Please don’t fabricate us wait too long for the rest of the seasons. There are a lot of people out there anxiously waiting for all of them.

I have been watching it on Discovery HD Theater when it premiered in March. The first episode “Pole to Pole” place the tone by showing the range of life and species that exist on this planet. The subsequent episodes delve into the habitats one by one. Mountains, Original Water, Caves, Deserts, Ice Worlds, Stout Plains, Jungles, Shallow Seas, Seasonal Forests and Deep Ocean are the subsequent episodes. This is one series that has to be seen to be believed of what the courageous cameramen of BBC/Discovery Channel have been able to seize through their sheer perseverance in remote locations. The HD technology has captured some scenes and images never seen before and some seen before but never with this clarity and beauty. 5 years, 62 countries and 204 locations is what it took to develop this series, and the result is a lifetime TV series.

This is one series that fascinated my kid as great as it amazed me. She wanted to peek her cartoons but the moment the episode began she was captivated. Both of us shared together the wonder that is our Planet and it was she who brought up the subject of what we might be doing to it by our actions. We cried when we saw how polar bears have begun to drown as ice melts faster every year. The image of one lone acquire trying to drag on ice but falling into the slushy waters, and having to swim longer distances to rob food and finally dying with exhaustion was heart breaking. The series makes no references to the exhibit conditions, fair in passing as with the polar beget. I watched a clip of David Attenborough’s version video on the web before I started watching the series with Sigourney Weaver’s narration, and I was disappointed by her blandness and lack of depth. I bought this space like many others to listen to Sir David’s narration. I was torn between the regular DVD space and the HD DVD though. This series is reliable enough to do me catch an HD DVD player impartial to be able to ogle it in its correct accomplish! However, the regular position has the Future series and the Planet Earth diaries which the HD location does not have. I loved the Planet Earth Diaries (or unhurried the scenes) with cameramen, it made a moving documentary on it’s fill, and wished some were longer. If they had the extra material in the HD DVD status, it would have been my first choice.

I had saved the Discovery HD Theatre epidodes on my HD Cable box and I was able to compare their image quality with this Standard DVD version playing on an upconverting DVD player. The Standard DVD looked exquisite edifying when upconverted to 720p and if I had not seen the HD version I would have been quite amazed with the image quality. Moral now I’ve been spoilt by the Discovery Theater version. If you’re considering the HD version it’s a tremendous choice if you have an HD DVD/BluRay player. You’ll probably not gaze a better HD disc. This series was shot completely in HD format. From my experience in the media industry I can stutter you that this is a very, very expensive format to shoot in especially given the 5 years that it took to create this series. Most television is shot in a regular digital format and then upconverted to the HD format later. That gives expansive images but they cannot compare to something shot totally in HD. That is the reason the image quality of this series is spectacular. In HD they were able to assume the action which when replayed in slow-motion also stays crystal distinct. Therefore you have breathtaking images of a shark capturing its prey (and many others) in slo-mo.

This really is the spot to win. It’s like a living documentation of the beauty of our earth, some of which was starting to travel fair as the cameras were rolling. Perhaps, that is why BBC and Discovery spared no cost to acquire this series and it is a masterpiece.

First off, let me say Thank you to Amazon for clarifying that the enormous David Attenborough is the narrator for this series. No Attenborough would have meant no hold on my share. Simply effect the most astonishing documentary on life and animals and the world around us that I have ever seen. The clarity is simply breathtaking(and that was on my tv brodcast which was in 720P…the HD transfers are in 1080p!!!!) .A astronomical tahnak you to the creators and producers for doing this for people like myself and many others who care deeply about the world around us.

My one minor complaint has to do with the fact that on the HD transfers, there is absent the supplemental material that is note on the standard defintion release. There is no 110 minutes of unhurried the scenes footage of what took state on these excavations to these wonderous places or interviews with the people, Attenborough or anyone for that matter. The other special feature not found on either the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD transfer is Planet Earth: The Future, which is a 150 microscopic documentary(Shot entirely in high defintion mind you) which chronicles how the whole series was created, and how we can continue to maintain our earth so that we may continue to have wonderous documentaries like this for our children’s children. Finally, amazingly there are charging the HD customers around $25 MORE for a product that has LESS recount than on the standard defintion release.

Otherwise highly reccomended presentation that is extremely addictive and immeasureably sensational from the first scene to the last. Its simply amazes me the beauty of God’s creations.

No matter how superb the Clooney remake is, he won’t touch this one at all…There’s only one Rat Pack!

Call this an addendum:

After seeing the Clooney release of OCEAN’S 11, I decided to add a few more thoughts. Well, the modern movie is ALMOST better—more action and more pacing, better scriptwriting. In short, a technically estimable film in most ways, which is marred by the one thing you can’t save a sign imprint on—the chemistry.

Although Clooney is colossal (he swanks across the hide like a Bond villain on vacation), Brad Pitt is appropriately and irreverently serious, and Carl Reiner is outrageously droll, the “recent crew” can’t replicate the charisma of the Rat Pack.

Although the Eleven in both films are con artists and thieves, they are the antiheroes we all dream of. At the raze of the recent, you feel for the “poor guys,” who, after all, ain’t really that terrible (“Coo-coo, baby!”) . The remake hardly introduces most of the Eleven, and you don’t really give a Rat’s Pack whether most of them rep away with it or not. They’re only props.

Julia Roberts is curiously flat, colorless, and dried up as Danny Ocean’s wife (where in the unusual, Angie Dickinson was undeniably THERE in what was a really very minor role) . Andy Garcia is an inappropriate presence as the “proper guy” casino owner.

Both films are worth your time. The one has what the other lacks. In short, if computer imnaging could ever morph the modern actors into the remake, this might unbiased be the best film ever made.

“Ocean’s 11″, produced in 1960, was the first of a series of films starring members of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy David Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop at the time. Lawford and Bishop would kicked out by Sinatra later on) for Warner Brothers and this movie was far and away the most current of the bunch. Many of the actors who hung out with Pack like Shirley McLaine would bag themselves in various cameo roles in this film. Although the DVD cloak calls this movie a heist caper, the script must ghastly as the most easygoing heist even presented on veil. In fact, Cesar Romero almost steals the prove as the (almost) retired gangster Duke Santos who might unbiased rupture the boys’ Original Year’s Eve party. It is surprising that some of the best scenes in the movie are ones without the nominal stars.

The main quandary with this edition of “Ocean’s 11″ is that it suffers from an identity crisis. You suspect it was intented to be a comedy, or a suspense, or maybe even a morality play but the script cannot construct up mind through most of the film. It is perhaps best to recount it an excuse for a group of people to develop a movie and have a suitable time doing it and hopefully the film audience will join in the fun.

If you like your crime films to have lots of suspense, action and explosions, “Ocean’s 11″ is not the film to scrutinize. If you like to search for a time capsule of a bygone era whose likes we will not view again, this film may work for you.

Well, for once I will not slit corners around this review, this film must be watched by everyone. It could quite possibly be the most well-done anime of all time.

Now, to begin off with the basics, “Metropolis” is a state-of-the-art anime that was based off of the frail Osamu Tezuka (“The God of Manga”, creator of “Astro Boy,” “Kimba,” and “Adolf” to name a few) laughable from 1949. It’s original update was written by Katsuhiro Otomo (“Robot Carnival,” and “Akira”) and directed by Rintaro (“X:The Movie,” and “Galaxy Thunder 999″) . But you all know that after reading the shallow Amazon review from above.

The film’s chronicle has been brought up again and again, so I won’t go into it that powerful. However, I will say this, the account is executed in a fabricate in which I would call “Noir Disney.” Don’t pain, it’s nothing abominable, it’s unbiased saying that although the film looks like it takes a childish reach to things, it tends to be a bit more on the unlit side. Thus, the film seems like a very intelligent blend of two different genres. Besides, Otomo takes coarse cautions with the script, shiny that the material it’s based on is nearly half a century primitive.

Characters are something to gleam over as well. Unlike “Akira,” “Ghost in the Shell,” or “Arcadia of my Youth” the characters have a burly conception of their emoitions. This can be credited not only to the well-behaved animation, but also to the very talented JAPANESE (not English) reveal cast. It is very easy to drop in savor with all of these characters. From the robot, Pero, to the detective Shunsaku Ban, even to the enigmatic Rock of the Marduk. A rarity even in Disney movies.

The animation is the loyal star of the exhibit. Blanding astounding CGI and veteran Tezuka-style characters, the artwork teems with both remarkable and simple energy that radiates from ever cell of animation. Madhouse Studios (“Ninja Scroll,” “Trigun,” “Cardcaptor Sakura,” and several others) spent a LOT of time and disaster on these breath-taking visuals. Whats more, they even keep in enough concern to accomplish the film seem as if it were alive. For example, in one scene, Shunsaku Ban is reading a book, he flips the page, but the page flips benefit (as it would in proper life) and he turns the page support to where it was. Don’t recognize my point? Well, considering that animation is a technique that requires A LOT OF TIME AND Anxiety, the fact that they would do something as little as that gives the film a clear clarity not seen today.

Last stamp, the soundtrack….wow. Everything about the music is so…so…I don’t know, intelligent, alive, genuine…I could throw out a lot of adjectives here. Its basically Dixie-Land Jazz played in the background and foreground throughout the entire film. It captures impartial about everything in the movie. From the city scapes, to the slither scenes, even to the tiny scenes like people in a bar. What’s the bright notice is the climax song, Ray Charles’ “I Can’t Close Loving You,” I won’t spoil the ending but I will objective say this, “Dr. Strangelove” anyone?

In the slay, “Metroplis” is a landmark in anime. EVERYONE should take the DVD when it comes out, or unprejudiced go to the theaters. Enjoy me, it is time worth spent. And if your an anime fan, you have more of a reason to go. You can’t be a right otaku simply by watching “Fushigi Yugi” and “Utena” all day long. Do yourself a favor and explore this. Between 1947 and 1949, Osamu Tezuka – who was to become the world’s best-known anime producer – issued a puny series of manga about a world of the future where industrialization, robots and humanity are all at odds. Inviting class differences also contribute to the tensions of a world largely in the hands of the power hungry. Now, 50 years later, Rintaro, another celebrated name in anime has decided to beget an film from the fresh manga, sparing no peril or expense.

We score Metropolis in the throes of a celebration. Duke Red has completed the Ziggurat, an immensely big building whose central tower conceals a solar weapon that will earn the city the capital of the world, and Duke Red its ruler. The intricate politics of Metropolis are based on three tiers – the upper class, a mammoth and impoverished lower class, and beneath all else, the robots. There is ample conflict over the role of the robots. Many dismay them, and an anti-robot faction called the Marduks peer the streets, ready to raze and automaton that acts out of line. Paramount is really putting out these TAGS seasons mercurial. Withhold them coming UNCUT (INCLUDING THE COLORED SEASONS PLEEEASE) . It’s supposed to be a guarded secret but, when it arrives, a crowd of people with a banner “Welcome Gold Truck” is there to greet it.

Barney and Thelma Lou, Phfftt: Barney makes a snort that he has Thelma Lou in his hip pocket. When she hears about his, Thel dates Gomer to effect Barney jealous. The kiss a girl you have to secure married thing is really laughable. Not one of my favorites.

Back to Nature: Barney brags to Opie’s camping buddies about what an expert man of nature he is and then gets lost in the woods with Gomer.

Just wondering after two amazing releases if Paramount will continue to give us edited episodes, as with the release of Season Three?? This was such a mountainous disappointment after waiting so many long years for uncut and complete episodes. Especially when as others have mentioned that some of these edited episodes have scenes included on TV Land that are missing from Paramount’s Season Three release!! This is outrageous!! How can they possibly account for using the word “complete”!! Please Paramount, if this is the best you can offer us, then maybe you should warn us ahead of time what we can interrogate in the future.

Shot in colour and released in 1957, “The Curse of Frankenstein” is, of course, the film that made Hammer Films a household name for horror/thriller movie fans all over the world. To fully bask in the importance and impact of “Curse”, you have to spy at it in the context of the time when it was made. By the mid-fifties, fright films had long passed their peak in Hollywood–certainly in terms of quality. Dismal and white “quickies”, with almost no budget, were being churned out for teenagers to glimpse at the drive-in ( at least, those who were watching the shroud! ) Shlock-masters like Roger Corman and Bert Gordon were turning out “masterpieces” like “The Wasp Woman” and “The Extraordinary Titanic Man”.

Suddenly, we have a puny studio in England, making a scare film with righteous production values, gorgeously creepy sets, attractive costumes, professional actors and a talented director, Terence Fisher. At the same time, along with a classy gape, you add liberal amounts of gore ( certainly by 1950s standards ), and a couple of voluptuous “damsels in afflict” who can shout lustily when they encounter the monster. It was a winning formula that Hammer would raise to an art fabricate.

Peter Cushing plays Baron Von Frankenstein, and his terrific performance dominates the film. His character goes through quite a transformation from sharp scientist to an obsessive fiend, clear to “acquire life” at, literally, any cost. His mentor/friend Paul Krempe ( Robert Urquhart ) is an fervent assistant at first, but soon becomes alienated by the Baron’s frantic and ultimately murderous behaviour. Sometimes body parts are easily available–sometimes you have to be “creative” in obtaining them!

Of course, this flesh and blood “jigsaw puzzle” comes to life in the execute of a monstrous, pathetic creature played by Christopher Lee, who soon breaks loose, displaying no appreciation whatsoever for being “born”! As I mentioned earlier, two glowing women “round out” the cast. Graceful Hazel Court is Elizabeth, the Baron’s betrothed, and Valerie Gaunt is Justine the maid. Justine is, as they say in England, the Baron’s “bit on the side”–when she threatens to spill all the Baron’s secrets unless he marries her, you fair know that her future is “cloudy”.

“Curse” may not be Hammer’s best film, but it attach the studio on the diagram and started an enduring partnership of two very gorgeous actors–Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

The DVD exhibits pleasurable colour, with occasional haziness and mono sound. The extras are sparse–a few notes on other Hammer films, and a trailer. I would have loved some comments from Mr. Lee–sadly Peter Cushing passed away some time ago.

Still, if you like classic dread films, “Curse” has to be in your collection–its importance cannot be over-estimated. Recommended.

A very murky footnote, dated 30 April 2008. Ms. Hazel Court has passed away at age 82. She was most notorious for her roles in horror/suspense films produced by the Hammer Studios and also Roger Corman. A talented actress, she always brought glamour and a touch of class to any production she was alive to in.

I’ve got to thank Warner Bros. for finally coming out with “The Curse of Frankenstein” on DVD. And where as I was a bit suspect of the quality of the film element conventional for the “Terror of Dracula” DVD released on the same date as “Curse”, I have no complaints at all about the quality of this film’s presentation by Warner.

It is pleasing. And apparently Warner mature a very sparkling quality source print for this release. The colors are exquisite, and the widescreen presentation is satisfying. As a mammoth admirer of Hammer films, it is spicy to finally scrutinize this beautifully photographed film as it was seen on the gigantic veil in 1958.

The sage is considerable closer to Mary Shelley’s novel unique, though the creature, here played by Christopher Lee, is worthy like the one portrayed by Karloff; astronomical, horrifying to ogle at, and almost an “idiot” in quick-witted capacity, but somehow tugging at our sympathies. But he is more plain to look in this film, with his spoiled white complexion, and bizarre, searching eyes. As the film progresses, he becomes even harder to explore as he is ravaged by the ugly encounters that gain up his shadowy, short existence.

And Peter Cushing is astounding in his portrayal of Baron Victor Frankenstein. He is a single-minded, driven scientist. Both shining intellectually, and uncompromising in vision. And yet, he is also not exactly horrible, though his actions are, as is seen clearly by the murdering of his one-time lover and maid, Justine, as you spy both determination and regret reflected in his expressions, while he listens to her screams.

It’s easy to discover why, when viewing both “Dread of Dracula” and “Curse of Frankenstein”, these two films made Cushing and Lee international stars and awe icons. Both films have near to characterize all that made Hammer Sudios expansive in their glory days, with lavish period sets, fine color photography, and music scores that rivalled bigger budget Hollywood films.

The DVD itself holds no extras of worthwhile mention. The facts presented in the slight fraction called “The Making of a Monster” are nothing that any entry level Hammer film follower would not know already. It’s a shame that Christopher Lee couldn’t be encouraged into doing a commentary, or a short interview on the film’s history and its influence on original terror. That may not be Warner Bros. fault, as we all know, Lee has been very busy of unhurried on the colossal shroud, and keeps very busy off of shroud.

Both “Curse of Frankenstein” and “The Dismay of Dracula” DVDs are a must for Hammer film lovers. Hopefully, if sales are helpful, Warner will release the other Hammer films they fill license to, such as “Taste the Blood of Dracula” and “Dracula Has Risen from the Grave”.

Rather than review the state of this almost universally beloved film, I’m objective going to comment about the quality of the 2006 60th Anniversary Edition DVD itself. I’ve since written an updated review about a novel edition of this title, now available in a “Two-Disc Collector’s Region.” Please gather that review — which was posted on December 13, 2008. (Amazon has posted my 2006 review in both places — even though the “60th Anniversary Edition” DVD is DIFFERENT from the “Two-Disc Collector’s State”. Read my write-up for the “Two-Disc Collector’s Space” — again, it’s DATED 2008 and too early to atrocious among the “most profitable” reviews — to better choose which product you pick.)

I’ve owned nearly every version of this title in almost every format available on home video during the past 25 years. It’s correct that the Whisper of this Viacom/Paramount DVD — including its special features — is identical to the Republic Pictures Home Video release more than 10 years ago.

However, this 60th Anniversary edition is spectacular for several different and extremely vital reasons. (I’ll address the criticisms some people have leveled about the sound on this 2006 DVD in a limited bit, so stick with me.)

You don’t have to be a technical expert to immediately glance the striking improvement of the represent AND sound in this 2006 edition. The print is crystal-clear and in my conception, has more vividness and sharpness than ALL other previous releases of this title on home video.

Proof? I effect my “musty” THX-version DVD issued by Republic Pictures / Artisan Home Video (the feeble DVD gold standard for this title) — into my Sony multi-changer DVD player — and watched and listened to every frame of this film AND its special features. I stopped and started this “older” DVD in several spots — and stopped and started the original 2006 Paramount edition repeatedly — so I could compare quality almost “side-by-side.”

Hands down — this 2006 version is incredible. The spots and dirt have been wiped tidy, the sharpness and disagreement are arguably better than what film audiences saw 60 years ago. There are no stale spots, no jumped frames and no lint, fiber or hair fragments along the edges or jumping across the mask. I contain the technicians at Paramount (which acquired Republic Pictures Home Video) — digitally cleaned EVERY frame of the last DVD release — so that the film now looks like a million dollars. It’s almost too pristine, if there is such a thing. No jump cuts, no “jump ahead” sound breaks, no fogged-out scenes, nothing outmoded — with the result being the cleanest and purest version of “It’s A Unbelievable Life” ever issued in home video history.

It gets better. English subtitles were available on older DVD versions of this title, but the 2006 version has a cleaner typeface, wiping out some of the confusing and unnecessary attributions of “who’s saying what” that were disruptive to some hearing-impaired viewers. In this 2006 version, you’ll score a mostly straight, line-by-line reading of what’s being said — as it’s being said.

Meanwhile, the DVD’s special features — which include the same pair of documentaries produced in 1990 and 1991 — are identical in that they were shot on video tape hence there isn’t remarkable improvement in record quality. However, subtitles that WERE NOT available for these special features — are NOW available in this 2006 edition. The only “extra” to the previous “gold standard” that remains unchanged — is the current 1946 trailer. Subtitles are not available and it has the same raggedness and dirt commonly seen with vintage trailers stored separately from the films they extinct to advertise.

I’m highly valuable of re-issued DVDs that seem nothing more than an excuse to squeeze more dollars out of buyers for the same material with novel packaging. But this 2006 Paramount DVD version of “It’s A Astonishing Life” is the best to date. It is NOT in color. (I possess a colorized version for younger people who can’t stand black-and-white. Despite controversy surrounding colorization, know that the 2007 “Two-Disc Collector’s Spot” has the same 2006 60th Anniversary black-and-white edition you look here — plus a novel “colorized” version. This version uses the same pristine print — but has the added bonus of boasting the best “color” hues ever seen for this film, using the latest image technology available. Despite my preference for black-and-white, the quality of this novel colorized version is impressive.)

Meanwhile, let’s address the criticisms about the sound on this recent DVD. Go abet a shrimp bit. Great was made when Republic Pictures Home Video got the THX LucasFilm sound system seal of approval for “It’s A Amazing Life” during the 1990s. But it was unexcited two-channel mono with negligible equalization of sound effects. In this 2006 DVD, you’ll catch consistent two-channel mono and decent sound equalization to minimize “booming” and over-modulated portions in the film. In the weak versions, you had to turn down the volume a notch during the musical portions — and turn it serve up when the dialogue came attend. It’s a nit-pick, but you really inspect the contrast if you’re crazy enough to do a side-by-side comparison like I did.

As for the digital sound “pops” that perfectionists withhold bringing up — they’re true. They’re even in the spots famed by another glowing reviewer who listed time codes where you can score them. But in my plan, unless you brace yourselves for them to approach like a booming deliver — unless you purposely crank up your speakers to carry sound throughout your house — yeah, you “might” be annoyed if you interrogate the same perfection for a film made in 1946 as you would for a film made in 2006. Honestly, the disproportionate attention given to these digital “pops” is, in my notion, giving fence-sitters the impression that they’re supersonic cracks of lightning that will get people jump out of their seats. I didn’t twitch at all. They almost “blended” into the 60-year-old soundtrack. Yes, I know they’re digital defects, but do you remember the zillion “pops” scattered throughout dirty prints of “It’s A Extraordinary Life” with filthy optical soundtracks? The audio on this 2006 DVD quiet wins. You have EVERY Legal to interrogate perfection for your dollars. But as a person who’s more fastidious than average — I don’t maintain most buyers will care about a few “pops” in a film that’s this conventional. Combine the overall improvements with the relatively grievous cost of this DVD — and I quiet say this is the BEST experience of “It’s A Unbelievable Life” I’ve ever SEEN and HEARD on home video.

Finally, another reason to select this DVD. It’s broken-down news to some, but it’s not widely known that this version of “It’s A Fabulous Life” can only be broadcast by NBC. It musty to air a zillion times during the holidays on every TV region on earth. It was a mercurial map to procure tired of even a well-kept film you assume you know by heart. But Viacom/Paramount now owns this version of “It’s A Unbelievable Life” outright and NBC has curious licensing rights to air it impartial once or twice after Thanksgiving. This is a advantageous thing for future generations to like.

So junk the mature, engage this version and be glad. It may feel painful, but it’s worth it. And no, I DON’T work for Amazon OR for Paramount Home Video.

A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra’s notorious career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the “celebrated man”. Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but “Life”’s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his tiny hometown of Bedford Falls — his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George’s triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character — his goodness, if you will — during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, involving strong audience identification and response.

In one of the most fair performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is advantageous as George. It’s not an easy role to play because so mighty hide time is spent focusing on George’s subtle reactions to the world around him. One amazing moment comes at the reveal spot when George slowly begins to beget the news of his brother’s unique marriage and unique career opportunity, and how his brother’s fortune will slay his acquire hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart’s face is fabulous in this scene, as surprised realization fades into tranquil disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart’s tour de force is given strong assist by a sterling cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George’s mother) . The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to gain. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal determined, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the heinous multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the bad colorized version, that were commonly screened serve in the tedious 1970’s and 1980’s. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a “making of” documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you’ll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!

Trivia note: If you’re a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson’s 1985 original “Suspects” which continues George’s epic and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed’s “Mary Bailey” is actually the sister of Gene Tierney’s “Laura”?!, etc.) … mammoth fun!

But you do collect what you pay for–the documentary itself lacks coherence, it feels rushed. They pack in many highlights, perhaps too many. Performances are not shown in their entirety, which is considerable when it comes to more artistic sports like figure skating and gymnastics.

There is one glaring ommission from this collection–the 1996 Women’s Gymnastics Team (aka the “Sparkling Seven”) is not included, nor is Shannon Miller (the most decorated US gymnast who finally won her golds in 1996) or Kerri Strug. It’s a shame, really.

I do recommend this DVD, but more of an introduction or overview. It is not a definitive Olympic collection by any stretch.

I am mostly a track enthusiast, so can hardly comment on the ice Olympic events. This DVD is over 6 hours long, containing many of the outstanding performances, including Jesse Owens, Bob Beamon’s stunning world relate breaking by nearly 2 feet in the long jump at in 1968 in Mexico (Beamon broke down into a seizure, not believing what he had impartial done…the delay in the result was because the length of his leap was beyond the measure of the equipment), Boxing’s Teofilo Stevens of Cuba, winning gold 3 times consecutively at the superheavyweight, Uganda’s John Akii-Bua (RIP) becoming the first to race under 48 seconds at the 400 meter hurdles, Lee Evans in 1968 becoming the first man under 44 seconds in the 400 meters (the dismal power salutes by Tommy Smith and John Carlos are not left out), Cuba’s Alberto Juantorena becoming the first Cuban track gold medallist when he won in (and first man ever with golds at both Olympic events) both the 400 and 800 meters urge. The list goes on and on. These are brief defining and emotional moments that include many other gold performances by such greats as Kip Keino at 1500, Abebe Bikila in the marathon, Florence Griffith Joyner, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Herb Elliot, Sebastian Coe, Edwin Moses, Haile Gebresellasie, Al Oerter (RIP) winning 4 consecutive golds at the discus, etc. This DVD is constructed to present essential wins of the games, and any viewer will likely wonder why some of the highlights are ommitted. Yet, the DVD captures many astounding moments of the Olympics, well worth more than the approximately $10 i bought the DVD. Notably, Michael Johnson who holds both the 400 and 200 meter records is missing in the highlights (though images of him are displayed in the openings) . In 1996, Johnson won the 200 meters in a narrate that may possess for many decades to advance…19.32 seconds (if I am not unsuitable) . Johnson, an alumnus of Baylor University in Texas, has also bustle the most sub-44 seconds 400 meter runs. I will alwasy love this slight edition DVD
